The timeline for Nova Scotia's plan to come out of lockdown

The dates listed below are suggested timelines provided by the government, and are suspect to change depending on the available epidemiology at the time. To read more about the reopening plan, click here. This timeline was last updated June 1, 2021.

April 28

Nova Scotia goes into lockdown to beat back its third wave.

May 28

Premier Iain Rankin lays out reopening up plan; announces new restrictions being lifted across the province for Wednesday, June 2. Schools across the province, except for the HRM and Sydney area, will go back to in-person learning by June 2.

May 31

The following Monday, Rankin updates the reopening plan to include HRM and Sydney area schools. they will go back to in-person learning on Thursday, June 3.

June 2

Phase one of the province's reopening plan begins. Among the restrictions lifted are on patios for bars and restaurants, who will now be open to serve groups of 10 outside with masks being mandatory when not eating or drinking.

Every 2-4 weeks Nova Scotia could enter a new phase. Phase 1 begins on June 2, and so could end as early as June 16 or June 30.


Phase 1

Starts: June 2

Criteria

💉 50% of the eligible population has received their first dose

📉 Cases continue to drop

😷 Hospitalizations and other key health indicators are monitored.

Public Health

Testing, masks and distancing continues. One designated shopper per household. Rapid testing still encouraged.

Travel and gatherings:

🚗 You can travel throughout Nova Scotia. Testing at Halifax Stanfield.

⛱️ Outdoor patios open with distancing 10 people in same social bubble.

🎩 Outdoor faith services 10 people, or drive in. Weddings and funerals with 5 indoors, 10 outdoors, plus officiants.

🏠 Groups of 10 people can gather outdoors; Indoors gathering limit remains your household.

Business and sport:

🏀 Team practices, amateur arts, outdoor fitness classes 10 people, professional rehearsals 15 people.

🏕️ No games, performances. One on one training. Campgrounds open.

🛍️ Retail open at 25% capacity with masks, distancing. Personal service by appointment (if mask can be worn).

LTC and youth:

🚗 Family visits outdoors with long-term care residents who are fully vaccinated.

✏️ Schools open, including CBRM and HRM.


Phase 2:

Could start: June 16/30

Criteria

⏱️ 2-4 weeks later.

💉 60% of population one dose.

😷 Hospitalizations and other key health indicators are monitored.

Public Health:

😷 Testing. Masks and distancing continues. More than one designated shopper

Travel and gatherings:

🏖️ Seasonal property owners, new residents of NS can enter, must isolate for 14 days.

👯 Outdoor gatherings of 25 people, 10 people indoors (household + visitors) no physical distance.

🍽️ Indoor dining 10 per table, with distancing.

Business and sport:

🏋🏾 Gyms and fitness at 50% capacity.

🎭 Team practices, amateur arts, meetings, training, clubs 10 indoors, 25 outdoors, professional rehearsals 15 indoors, 25 outdoors. people. No games.

💈 Retail open at 50% capacity with masks, distancing. Personal services by appointment.

Education and youth:

🖼️ Museums and libraries at 25%.

🥽 Day camps at 15 per group, including staff/volunteers. Adult day programs reopen.


Phase 3

Could start: June 30/July 28

Criteria

⏱️ 2-4 weeks later.

💉 65% of population one dose.

😷 Hospitalizations and cases dropping.

Public Health:

😷 Testing. Masks and distancing continues.

Travel and gatherings:

🦞 No travel restrictions in NS. Atlantic Bubble reopens. Travelers from outside the bubble can enter, must isolate for 14 days.

👯 Indoor gatherings 10 visitors+ household no distancing.

🥂 Restaurants open to midnight.

🛐 Faith services resume with limit TBD.

Business and sport:

🏐 Gyms and fitness at 75% capacity.

🎭 Spectators events, games, special events, training, clubs, meetings resume, limits tbd. Spectators allowed with event gathering limits.

💇🏽 Retail open at 75% capacity with masks, distancing. Personal services open fully.

Education and youth:

⛺ Overnight camps with 15 including staff and volunteers.


Phase 4

Could start: July 14/Aug. 25

Criteria

⏱️ 2-4 weeks later.

💉 75% of population one dose.

😷 Very few cases, little spread.

Public Health:

😷 Testing. Masks and distancing continues.

Travel and gatherings:

✈️ Travelers from outside the bubble may need to isolate may be determined by vaccine status, border testing, and epidemiology of other provinces.

🎉 Indoor limits for households 25 no distancing. Informal outdoor gatherings 50 no distancing.

👵🏽 Family visits outdoors with long-term care residents who are not fully vaccinated.

Business and sport:

⚽ Sports, professional, amateur arts, 50 participants with no distance and masks, for practices, games, league play, rehearsals, in person performances.

🎭 Spectators, special events, meetings, trainings, clubs, gyms and fitness limits tbd.

🏬 Retail open to 100% where possible, with masks, distancing

Education and youth:

🎒 Day camps to 30 per group indoors and outdoors, without distancing.


Phase 5

Sometime late August/early September

Criteria

⏱️ Projected for September.

💉 75% of population two doses.

Restrictions remaining:

😷 Testing. Easing of public health measures. Federal regulations and requirements need to be considered.

✈️ Reduced border restrictions.

👯 Increased gathering limits for sports, arts, events, businesses, indoor gatherings and more.
